July Releases

July Releases

Summer's hitting full swing, and the box office is heating up in response.  Or, you know, moving past lukewarm , at least.  The two biggest spotlight belong unquestionably to Spider-Man: Far From Home, a reunion with everyone's favorite web-head as he navigates a post-Endgame world; and Disney's 3d remake of The Lion King, one of the most famous and beloved animated films of all time that basically introduced the premise of Hamlet to a wider audience.

Besides these two heavy hitters, July hosts a surprising diversity of indies, documentary films, and (gasp!) original films that aren't remakes/sequels/adaptations.  So this month might be a good time to stretch those horizons a bit.

In video game land, Final Fantasy XIV Online releases Shadowbringers, its latest DLC, while the third season of hit Netflix series Stranger Things gets a game makeover.  Speaking of Stranger Things, Season 3's soundtrack is out as of the start of this month, while Fever Dream, the third album in Icelandic band Of Monsters and Men's apparently 4-year cycle of releases,  debuts later in July.

As always, check the links below to get the latest skinny on entertainment premieres this month:

July's here, baby, and Mo McRae and others are already setting off fireworks this Tuesday with the release of The First Purge, the latest installment in James DeMonaco's infamous film series covering - you guessed it - the first Purge, a concept that somehow manages to make less sense as the series expands. Marvel takes another stab at box office glory with Ant-Man and the Wasp, while Hotel Transylvania 3, Teen Titans GO to the Movies, and Netflix release Duck Duck Goose are likely to remind all of us yet again why Disney/Pixar has snagged 12 out of 17 Academy Awards for Best Animated Feature. Rounding out the box office are a couple of sequels, which are sure to sate everyone's high-flying, bad guy-blasting, summer blockbuster needs.

It's that time again!  June was a pretty quiet month for me, but I'm back, and we've got a lot ahead of us.  Although Tarzan and The Purge have come and gone this Independence Day weekend, we still have The Secret Life of Pets, Ghostbusters, and Lights Out around the corner, plus a couple of other hot items on the box office menu.

Television is an endless drought like always in the summer time, but the new comedy series Vice Principals, starring Danny McBride, should provide a few fresh laughs when it premieres on the 17th.
