October Releases

October Releases

Better late than never.

October brings the heavy Halloween hitters to the box office brawl, not least of which is Warner Bros.'s foray into the dark side of the DC universe with the American premiere of Joker, an experimental first salvo into a proposed line of superhero films with indie sensibilities. If you're looking for monster clowns of a different shade, there's Wrinkle the Clown, an...odd, documentary about a Florida retiree who for a fee will don an unnervingly creepy clown mask and scare rambunctious rugrats straight - and no doubt, gift them with a good helping of life-long coulrophobia.  The animated film version of The Addams Family will debut later this month as well, bringing a Tim Burton-esque vibe to the classic monster family, while Breaking Bad fans dust off their beakers and snappy Heisenberg one-liners in preparation for El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie, a continuation of the groundbreaking series following show deuteragonist Jesse Pinkman as he struggles to claw his way out from the muck of his past deeds.

The small screen sees the return of many TV favorites - like Riverdale, The Flash, and 'verse progenitor Arrow's much-anticipated swan song - along with a few newcomers.  Ruby Rose will reprise her role as the Arrowverse version of the controversial Batwoman in the CW's latest superhero addition, while HBO sets about the herculean task of adapting the legendary Alan Moore's magnum opus Watchmen into an extended series.

October's approach heralds the end of the year, and as usual, Hollywood scrambles to close it with a bang.  Probably the front "runner" this month is Blade Runner 2049, an old-school neo-noir sequel with some mighty big shoes to fill.  Coming out the same day is My Little Pony's feature film debut, which will no doubt see its theaters filled to the brim with grown men pretending to bring their daughters or little sisters to see itHappy Death Day, starring rising actress Jessica Rothe, is best described as Scream meets Groundhog Day - a premise that just might be more interesting than it sound.

On t.v., ABC's Kevin (Probably) Saves the World is a Jason Ritter showcase, centered on a sad and somewhat self-absorbed failed banker who's chosen by God to - you guessed it - save the world.  We'll see if the series lives up to the nefarious tightrope of optimistic life affirmation mildly cynical self-awareness that's always so difficult to pull off.  Channel-mate The Mayor examines the saga of a rapper who ran for mayor as a publicity stunt actually gets elected in a manner that has nothing to do with recent American politics over the past year or anything.  Seriously, you reading into it too much.

There is plenty of other great stuff coming out this month across the entertainment industry, so have a look down below at the latest in games, books, and music.

October Releases

I was a little out of commission last month thanks to my own projects, but now I'm back, and just in time for...well, not a whole lot this October, to be honest. Or at least, not in the box office; the fall tv lineup is finally gathering some momentum after a ho-hum showing in September, returning some old favorites, like Arrow and The Flash, with a fresh face or two along for the ride.

For you fans of the Bethesda WRPG franchise juggernaut, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition is coming to PS4, Xbox and PC by the end of the month.  You may now once again march across the snowy throat of Tamriel, slaying dragons with serious graphical improvements.  And the best part?  Mod support has apparently been added for console owners, which means you no longer need to sell your soul to the PC Master Race in order to enjoy the near-infinite flexibility that comes with modding.

October Releases

The first month of the Fall premieres has come and gone, giving us a general sense of how the rest of this season will play out.  There have been a few gems, a couple of duds, and many more I refrain from judging until I see more of what they got. On another note, theater season is back in swing, so between that, the movies, and the continual unfurling of the fall line up, October promises to be an interesting month.
